Limousin view
The view from the gite

With maginificent panoramic views across the valley of the River Maulde to the nearby hamlet of St. Julien le Petit, Fontchauvaux Jeaune, our two bedroomed gite, is ideally located for the enjoyment and exploration of this picturesque region of the Limousin.

We loved it so much we bought the house... and the barn... and the outbuildings... and the orchard... and...!

The local hamlet of St.-Julien-le-Petit with its 13th century church, bar/restaurant, Mairie and post office (part time) is a half a kilometre across the valley while the nearby purpose made river beach is a 15 minute amble away along leafy lanes, offering dedicated adult and childen's swimming areas, toilets, changing facilities and picnic tables. Fishing is permitted subject to the purchase of a permit, available from the local auberge.

A 6km drive (bike ride? walk?) along the river lies Bujaleuf with extensive beaches at Lac St. Helene providing swimming, volleyball, boules, camping, fishing and picnic facilities.

10 km to the East is the massive 1000 hectare expanse of Lac Vassiviere with numerous beaches, play facilities, wind surfing, water skiing, swimming, floating restaurants and the Isle de Vassiviere , complete with Chateaux, contemporary arts centre, children's animal corner and a myriad of walks and sculpture trails.

Ancient market towns abound in the area, wih Peyrat Le Chateau (10 mins drive), Eymoutiers (15 mins), St. Leonard de Noblat and Bourganeuf (20 mins), all offering a wide range of shops, cafés, restaurants, local produce markets and walking, cycling, horse riding and other facilities - including a steam rail service!

The medieval regional capital, Limoges, with its cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Grand market Hall, Museum of the Resistance and pedestrianised ancient streets with cafés, shops and speciality porcelain outlets is a 45 minute drive westard.
